In 1964, The Who became one of the key figures of the British Invasion, taking the American music scene by storm. While Roger Daltrey, Pete Townsend and Keith Moon took the spotlight with their on stage antics, John Entwistle, dubbed “The Quiet One,” stood in the shadows… poised to become the biggest bass player in rock and roll. With his arena-rock days behind him, Entwistle continud down his own path, finding great musical freedom with the John Entwistle Band. In 2002, after years of touring his solo project, Entwistle couldn’t resist the lure of bringing back one of the greatest bands in rock and roll history. Tragically, plans for The Who’s North American Reunion Tour were cut short when on the eve of the first show John was found dead in his Las Vegas hotel room. “The Ox,” as Entwistle was affectionately known, left behind many fans and several unfinished projects. With his passing, the world lost a musical legend, dubbed Guitar Magazine’s “Bassist of the Millennium.” Narrated by Peter Frampton, John Entwistle: An Ox’s Tale covers the life of John Entwistle, from his first public performance at the age of 14 to his feelings about The Who’s most recent reunion. This film contains the last footage and interviews ever shot with Entwistle, offering the one chance for fans to discover the real life behind the man who far exceeded his greatest aspirations.

Robin Williams and Annabella Sciorra star in this visually stunning metaphysical tale of life after death. Neurologist Chris and artist Annie had the perfect life until they lost their children in an auto accident; they’re just starting to recover when Chris meets an untimely death himself. He’s met by a messenger named Albert (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and taken to his own personal afterlife–a freshly drawn world reminiscent of Annie’s own artwork, still dripping and wet with paint. Meanwhile a depressed Annie takes her own life, compelling Chris to traverse heaven and hell to save Annie from an eternity of despair.
The multitextured visuals seem to have been created from a lost fairy tale. Heaven recalls the landscape paintings of Thomas Cole and Renaissance architecture complete with floating cherubs, while hell is a massive shipwreck, an upside-down cathedral overgrown with thorns and a sea of groaning faces popping out of the ground (one of those faces is German director Werner Herzog). Williams is the perfect actor to play against the imaginative computer-generated imagery–he himself is a human special effect. But the lack of chemistry between Williams and Sciorra is painfully apparent, and the flashback plot structure flattens the story’s impact despite its deeply felt examinations of the heart and the spirit. Still, there’s no denying Eugenio Zanetti’s triumphant production design and the Oscar-winning special effects, which create a fully formed universe that is at once beautiful, eerie, and a uniqu example of movie magic. –Shannon Gee

Threats and revelations pile up, as this sci-fi adventure by Masami Obari, the director of Battle Arena Toshiden, continus. In the war against the Virus, Serge and his fellow S.T.A.N.D. officers are taunted by a sardonic jokester in a cyclops mask who identifies himself as “The Brain Lizard.” Mirei is infected with the Virus when she attempts to track a cyber-murderer, but she’s saved by a group of her old friends and fellow hackers. S.T.A.N.D. captures another hacker, Ryu, who used to be a buddy of Serge’s. He reveals that S.T.A.N.D.’s star officer is the clone of an old scientist, Dr. Milan Treyn. Obari once again tries to disguise the cheapness of the animation with aggressive cutting, dramatically lit shadows, and flamboyant colors, but it’s obvious that the artists can’t even keep the characters on model.
